Local Responsibility Map (LRA)
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) released an updated Local Responsibility Area (LRA) Fire Hazard Severity Map on February 24, 2025, identifying areas in the Kentfield Fire District now categorized as Moderate Fire Hazard Zones. The map did not include Very High or High Fire Hazard Zones. LRA maps help communities understand wildfire risk and informs future building and safety regulations.

LRA Map Adopted by Ordinance by the Kentfield Fire District May 14, 2025.
The Kentfield Fire District reviewed CalFire’s draft map and created a local version for adoption. The District did not modify, or upgrade the severity zones identified by CalFire, based on local conditions and risk assessments. The Kentfield Fire District held a public hearing on May 14, 2025 and the Board of Directors adopted Ordinance 2025-119 titled "An Ordinance of the Kentfield Fire Protection District to Designate Fire Hazard Severity Zones in Local Responsibility Areas".
The Process:

Public Review: The district shared the draft map for public review and comment. The map was made available on March 12, 2025 and Public Comment was closed on May 14, 2025. No comments were received.

Public Comment Online:The district provided the community with the ability to submit public comments. As noted above, Public Comment was closed on May 14, 2025. No comments were received.

Ordinance Adoption: The district adopted the finalized map and ordinance within 120 days of receiving the map as required. The Public hearing which included a succesful adoption of Oridinance 2025-115 was held on May 14, 2025.

Submission to CalFire: After adoption, the District submitted the ordinance to CalFire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are there new maps?
1. Government code 51178 requires the state to identify moderate and high severity zones in addition to very high.
2. Previous LRA maps only contained very high.
3. These maps may include new areas that were not previously identified by the state fire marshal.
What could (or couldn't) the fire district do with the new maps?
1. Government code 51179 does not allow local agencies to decrease the level of fire hazard severity zone or to remove areas from the recommended map.
2. Government code 51179 does allow a local agency to include additional areas not identified by the State Fire Marshal. The fire protection district did not add any areas to the maps.
